What is the Derma Roller

The Derma Roller is a single roller device which consists of a rotating wheel studded with tiny 1.5 mm long needles. These needles penetrate the skin, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, which in turn cause the skin to mount an injury response. This procedure utilises the collagen and elastin to thicken the skin, repair scars and smooth out any fine lines and wrinkles. This stimulus also causes growth of new capillaries which improves blood supply to the skin. The Derma Roller treatment

The process involves rolling a small barrel covered in very fine and small                                                                                                           needles (1.5mm) quickly over the area to be treated in six directions. The needles                                                                                             puncture the skin and part the pores of the top layer of skin without damaging it.                                                                                                 The process however is read as damage by the body and growth factors that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin are triggered. The skin renews itself every 40 days and therefore with 3-6 weekly treatments you see noticeable changes which grow with every treatment. Is the Derma Roller treatment painful?

 

No the treatment is not painful, but it can be mildly uncomfortable. The skin is numbed before treatment either with local anaesthetic cream or nerve block. After the treatment you may feel as if you have slight sunburn for the next 12-24 hours.

 

Is it safe?

What results can I expect?

After a Dermaroller treatment your body will start to naturally regenerate and repair the skin, working below the surface in the dermis. This takes time as new collagen and elastin is formed, new skin cells are regenerated and blood supply is enhanced. It can take up to 6 weeks before visible signs of regeneration and repair are seen and this will continue over the following months, providing you with gradual and long lasting enhancement.

 

Are there any side effects?

Immediately after the treatment yours skin will look as though you have moderate sunburn and it may feel warm and tighter than usual. This will start to subside after 1 to 2 hours and will normally recover within the same day with only slight redness the following day. How many treatments are recommended?

We normally recommend that your Dermaroller treatments consists of a series of three treatments with approximately 6 weeks between them. In the treatment of acne scars and other types of scarring it may be necessary that the client has up to 5 treatments.

 

How many treatment will I need in order to see beneficial results?

For some people a single treatment session is all that is needed to significantly improve the texture and appearance of their skin. Most people will require up to 4 treatment sessions, typically at six week intervals. For patients with severe acne scarring, up to five Derma Roller treatments will be needed. Improvement in skin texture and tone may appear one to three weeks after the initial treatment.

 

Straight after treatment

You can go back to your daily activities almost immediately. Your skin may be red for up to 24 hours.

Should anyone avoid this treatment?

The treatment should be avoided by anyone with skin cancer,  who is allergic to local anaesthetic, on chemotherapy, radiotherapy or high doses of

corticosteroids or with a history of keloid scars, if your are a sufferer of herpes simplex (cold sores) as the treatment can bring them out but will only last a week.
